Custom Deck Construction in Austin, TX

Thrive Landscape and Design builds custom, permit-ready decks for Austin homeowners on sloped Hill Country lots, around mature live oaks, and over walkout grade changes. Every deck is engineered to your property, your view, and the Texas climate.

A custom deck is not a kit. It is a structure designed around your lot, your home, and the way you actually want to live outside. Austin properties rarely sit flat, and most have at least one mature tree, a walkout basement, a lake view, or a slope that a standard rectangle cannot handle. Thrive Landscape and Design builds decks that step with the grade, wrap around live oaks, frame Hill Country views, and tie cleanly into your existing siding, trim, and roofline. From the first site survey to the final punch list, you work with a crew that handles permits, engineering, material selection, and craftsmanship in-house.

Our Process

  1. Sloped Lost-Pines backyard with a stone retaining wall and deck site

    Site Survey

We walk the property with you, measure grade changes, map mature live oaks and their critical root zones, check sightlines to lake or canyon views, and note how the deck needs to tie into the existing siding, trim, and roofline. You leave the visit with a clear sense of what is possible on your lot.

  2. Design & Permit

We draft plans and elevations, finalize material choices for Texas heat (Western Red Cedar, ipe, capped polymer, or capped PVC), and prepare the package the City of Austin Development Services Department needs for residential deck permitting. If your home is in an HOA neighborhood, we handle architectural review at the same time.

  3. Deck under construction beside a firepit and planting beds on a shaded Riverplace lot

    Build

Our crew drills pier-and-beam foundations into the caliche or limestone, sets posts to engineered heights, frames each level, and lays the decking. We protect live oak root zones during construction and step the structure to follow the slope rather than fight it.

  4. Finish & Punch List

We install railings, stairs, built-in benches, planters, and any hot tub framing, then seal or finish the deck as the material requires. Before we wrap, we walk the deck with you, write down anything that needs adjusting, and finish every item on the punch list before final sign-off.

Signs You Need A Custom Build

Custom Deck Construction in Austin

A standard rectangular deck works on a flat suburban lot. Most Austin properties are not that. If any of these describe your yard, a custom build is usually the right move.

  • Lakeway, Westlake, Steiner Ranch, and Lake Travis lots rarely sit flat. A custom deck steps with the grade on pier-and-beam foundations drilled into caliche or limestone instead of fighting the slope.

  • If a live oak sits where you want to sit, we wrap the deck around it. We map the critical root zone, set piers outside the roots, and frame a clean trunk opening so the tree keeps growing.

  • Elevated decks over walkout grade changes and lake-view lots in Lago Vista, Spicewood, and Lakeway need posts, railings, and sightlines designed around the view, not stamped from a template.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Most Austin lots are not flat rectangles. Hill Country slopes, mature live oaks, walkout grade changes, and lake-view sightlines call for a deck designed around your property, not stamped from a template. A custom build lets us wrap around trees, follow the slope, frame your view, and tie cleanly into the existing siding and roofline.

  • In most cases, yes. The City of Austin Development Services Department typically requires a residential building permit when the deck is attached to the house or sits more than 30 inches above grade. We handle the permit drawings and submittals on your behalf and confirm requirements with Development Services before we break ground.

  • Yes. Wrapping a deck around a mature live oak is one of our specialties. We map the critical root zone (CRZ), use helical piers or hand-dug piers placed outside the root structure, leave a generous trunk opening for growth, and pick framing layouts that protect the canopy. Done right, the tree thrives and the deck looks like it was built around it on purpose.

  • For wood, Western Red Cedar handles Austin heat well and stays cooler underfoot than darker species. Ipe and other Brazilian hardwoods are extremely durable but run hotter and cost more. For composite, capped polymer and capped PVC boards resist fade and surface heat better than older composite formulas. See the Texas A&M Forest Service wood durability resources for more detail.

  • Most custom decks take four to eight weeks from signed contract to final punch list. Design and permit usually run two to three weeks, and the build itself typically takes two to four weeks depending on size, levels, and material lead times. We give you a written schedule before any digging starts.

  • Sloped lots in Lakeway, Westlake, Steiner Ranch, and Lake Travis are where custom builds pay off. We drill pier-and-beam foundations into the caliche and limestone, set posts to engineered heights, and frame the deck to step with the grade. That keeps the structure stable, code-compliant, and visually balanced against the hill. For industry standards we follow guidance from NADRA.

  • We design with HOA approval in mind. Many Austin-area neighborhoods require an architectural review before construction, especially in Steiner Ranch, River Place, Lost Creek, and similar communities. We prepare the elevation drawings, material specs, and color samples your HOA needs and adjust the plan if the committee requests changes.
