Paver Installation in Austin, TX

Thrive Landscape and Design installs interlocking concrete pavers for patios, driveways, walkways, and pool decks across the greater Austin, TX area. Engineered base, polymeric sand joints, and edge restraint built for Central Texas clay.

Interlocking concrete pavers are the dominant patio, driveway, and pool deck hardscape in Austin alongside flagstone, and for good reason. Individual units flex with the seasonal swelling and shrinking of Central Texas clay soils, single cracked pavers can be lifted and replaced without ripping out an entire slab, and permeable paver systems can help manage stormwater on lots that are tight on impervious cover. Thrive Landscape and Design installs every paver field to ICPI standards: compacted aggregate base over geotextile fabric, screeded sand setting bed, polymeric sand in the joints, and a buried edge restraint that keeps the field locked together for the long haul. We work with pavers from Belgard, Pavestone, Keystone, Techo-Bloc, and other manufacturers commonly stocked in the Austin market, so you have a full range of colors, sizes, and patterns to choose from. Our Process

  1. Aerial view of a paver layout set into gravel and mulch at a Spicewood, Austin home

    Layout

We start with a site visit to mark the footprint, confirm drainage direction, and lock in the paver style, color, and pattern. You will see exactly where the field starts and stops before a single shovel hits the dirt, and we plan transitions to existing slabs, lawn, and home thresholds so the finished surface sits at the right height.

  2. Excavate & Base

We dig to the depth the design needs over Austin clay or caliche, cut and fill to grade, and roll out non-woven geotextile fabric. Then we install a 6-inch minimum compacted aggregate base for patios, deeper for driveways, compacting in lifts so the foundation cannot settle later. A screeded sand setting bed goes down last to hold the pavers true.

  3. Cream pavers set into synthetic turf in a checkerboard pattern at a Round Rock backyard

    Set Pavers

We lay the pavers in the chosen pattern: running bond, herringbone, basketweave, or a circle kit centerpiece. Cuts are made with a wet saw for clean edges around curves, drains, and structures. Plastic or steel edge restraint is spiked into the base around the perimeter so the field stays locked in place, even on driveways with vehicle loads.

  4. Sand & Seal

We sweep polymeric sand into every joint, plate-compact the field to set the pavers into the bedding sand, and mist the surface so the binders in the polymeric sand activate. Once cured, the joints resist weeds, ants, and washout. If you want a sealer for color enhancement or stain resistance, we apply it after the field has had time to cure.

Signs Pavers Are Right for You

Why Pavers Win in Austin

If you have lost faith in poured slabs, want long-term flexibility over Central Texas clay, or need design options a concrete finish cannot match, an interlocking concrete paver field is usually the right call.

  • Slabs over expansive clay tend to crack at the joints and corners. A paver field flexes with the soil, and any one unit can be lifted and replaced without a patch line.

  • Lighter-colored pavers with slip-resistant textures reflect more heat than dark broom-finished concrete, which makes a real difference around Austin pools in July and August.

  • Permeable interlocking pavers let stormwater drain through the joints into an open-graded base. On tight Austin lots, that can change how a project is reviewed. See City of Austin Watershed Protection for current rules.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A poured concrete slab is one rigid piece. When Austin clay swells and shrinks with the seasons, slabs crack, and once they crack the fix is rarely invisible. Interlocking concrete pavers are individual units bedded over a compacted base. They flex with soil movement, and if a unit chips or stains, you pull it and drop in a replacement. Pavers also offer far more color, texture, and pattern choices than a slab finish.

  • For a patio over Austin clay, we install a 6-inch minimum compacted base of decomposed granite or road base, compacted in lifts. Driveways get a deeper base, typically 8 to 10 inches, to handle vehicle loads. We separate the subgrade from the base with a non-woven geotextile fabric so the clay does not pump up into the aggregate over time.

  • A properly installed paver field will not drift if the base was compacted in lifts, the edges are restrained with plastic or steel edging spiked into the base, and the joints are filled with polymeric sand. Shifting almost always traces back to a shortcut on base depth, missing edge restraint, or skipped joint sand. We follow ICPI installation standards for every job.

  • Pool deck pavers are made with a textured, slip-resistant face and a slightly thicker profile to handle freeze-thaw and chlorinated water. We also recommend lighter colors around pools and in full-sun areas of Austin since lighter pavers reflect more heat and stay more comfortable under bare feet during summer.

  • Polymeric sand is a jointing sand blended with binders that activate with water. Once it cures, it locks the joints, resists weeds, and keeps ants from tunneling under the field. Yes, you want it. Plain sand washes out in the first heavy Texas storm. We sweep it in, compact the field, mist it, and let it set before the patio gets used.

  • Permeable interlocking concrete pavers use wider, aggregate-filled joints so stormwater drains through the surface into an open-graded base instead of running off. In Austin, that can matter for impervious cover limits on certain lots. The City of Austin’s Watershed Protection and Development Services departments confirm how a specific permeable system is counted on your property, so we plan the build around their current rules.

  • Often yes. If your existing slab drains, is structurally sound, and has the height clearance at doors and thresholds, we can overlay it with thinner pavers on a bonded or sand-set system with proper edge detail. If the slab is cracked, settling, or holding water, an overlay will inherit those problems and we will recommend a tear-out and rebuild instead.
