August is when Austin sprinkler systems tell on themselves. A zone that quit sometime in June. A geyser where a head used to be. One strip of yard that is brown while the rest is fine. Or the one nobody notices until the bill arrives, a slow mainline leak that ran all month underground.
We install and repair irrigation as part of our design and build work across Austin and the Hill Country, so we open these systems up every week. Here is what repairs actually cost here, what a new system costs, and how to tell which one you need.
How much does sprinkler repair cost in Austin?
Most Austin homeowners are looking at $150 to $600 for a typical repair visit. That range is wide because "sprinkler repair" covers everything from a five minute swap to a half day of digging. Roughly what we see in this market:
- Service call or diagnostic: $75 to $150, sometimes waived if you approve the work
- Head replacement: $10 to $30 per head in parts plus labor, so a handful of heads usually lands at $150 to $350
- Valve replacement: $175 to $400 per valve. The valve is cheap. Getting to it is not.
- Controller replacement: $250 to $600 installed for a standard timer
- Mainline or lateral leak: $300 to $900 depending on depth and what sits on top of it
- Wire tracing and repair: $200 to $500, and this is the one that surprises people
Two things move those numbers. Access is the first: a valve under a flagstone patio costs more than a valve in open turf, because we have to take something apart and put it back. Diagnosis time is the second. Finding the problem is often the expensive part, not fixing it.
Why is sprinkler repair so expensive?
Because almost all of it is buried, and because Central Texas ground fights back.
Most of a system sits eight to twelve inches down in soil that is black clay, caliche, or both on the same lot. Clay swells and shrinks with our feast or famine rainfall, which shears pipe and pulls fittings apart. Caliche is close to rock, so a trench that takes twenty minutes in sandy soil takes two hours here.
Then there is the detective work. A dead zone can be a bad valve, a cut wire, a failed solenoid, a clogged filter, or a controller that lost its program, and none of it is visible from the surface. That time is real labor whether the answer is a $12 part or a $400 repair. If a quote sounds too cheap, nobody has diagnosed anything yet.
What causes most sprinkler system failures in Austin?
Soil movement sits behind most of them. Our clay expands when it finally rains and contracts hard through a dry August, and that stresses every rigid joint. It cracks fittings, separates glued connections, and slowly tilts heads until they spray the fence instead of the lawn.
The rest of the list is short:
- Buried or broken heads. Mowers and trucks find them. So does mulch, and we regularly find working heads that simply sit below grade after years of topping up beds.
- Roots. Live oaks and cedar elms wrap lateral lines, lift them, and change their grade until a joint fails.
- Pressure problems. Austin pressure varies by neighborhood and elevation. Too little and heads do not turn or reach. Too much and you get misting that blows away before it lands.
- Builder grade installs. In newer subdivisions around Round Rock, Pflugerville, and Cedar Park, the system came fast and cheap with the house. Too few zones, heads spaced too far apart, turf spray aimed into planting beds. Those systems did not break. They were never designed for the yard.
What does a whole new sprinkler system cost in Austin?
For a typical Austin lot, a properly designed new system generally runs $700 to $1,400 per zone installed. Most homes need four to eight zones, so a common range is roughly $3,500 to $9,000.
Zones matter more than square footage. A zone is a group of heads that run together, and you need separate zones anywhere water demand differs: sun and shade, turf and beds, front slope and flat back yard. A seven zone system costs more than a four zone system because the design is doing more work, not because the yard is bigger.
What pushes the number up here is rock, mostly. Trenching caliche or shallow limestone west of Mopac and out toward Dripping Springs adds real hours. Boring under an existing driveway instead of cutting it costs extra and is worth it. Backflow prevention is a required line item, not an afterthought.
We normally build irrigation as part of a larger landscape construction project, because the cheapest time to install or rework a system is while the beds are already open and before any hardscape goes down.
How long should a sprinkler system last, and when do you replace instead of repair?
A well built system here should give you 15 to 20 years, though the parts inside wear out faster. Heads and nozzles are more like 5 to 10 years, controllers often go first after a bad lightning season, and buried PVC outlives all of it.
Keep repairing when the design is sound and the system is simply aging. Replace heads, replace valves, upgrade the controller, and it will run for years.
Replace when the design itself is the problem. The signs are consistent:
- You are fixing something two or three times a season
- Zones water areas that are no longer lawn, because you added beds or a patio
- Coverage was never right, so you overwater the whole yard to keep one dry corner alive
- The system was built for a lawn you no longer want
That last one comes up constantly. Turf spray heads are the wrong tool for planting beds, and no amount of irrigation repair fixes a layout built around grass. Who is legally allowed to repair a sprinkler system in Texas?
This is the easiest way to filter out bad quotes, and most homeowners do not know it.
Irrigation is a licensed trade in Texas. Under state rules, a person may not sell, design, install, maintain, alter, repair, service, or inspect an irrigation system unless they are licensed by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. There are three license types: Landscape Irrigator, Irrigation Technician, and Irrigation Inspector. A technician has to work under a licensed irrigator.
One exception: you may work on your own system at your own home without a license. That does not cover rental property you own, and it ends the moment you hire someone to help.
So ask anyone quoting you for their irrigator license number. A licensed irrigator answers without hesitating. Then ask whether the quote is itemized by part and labor, what the warranty covers, and whether they will test the whole system or only the zone you complained about.
If your system connects to Austin Water through a backflow prevention assembly, that assembly is also subject to annual testing and reporting by a state licensed tester registered with the City.
How do Austin's watering rules change what your system needs?
More than most people expect, and this is where good design pays for itself.
Austin has been under Conservation Stage water use restrictions since September 2025. Automatic irrigation systems get one designated day per week, only before 10 a.m. or after 7 p.m. Even numbered addresses water Thursday, odd numbered addresses water Wednesday. You can confirm yours on Austin Water's watering day lookup.
Here is the part worth reading twice. Hose end sprinklers and drip irrigation are allowed up to two designated days per week, not one. Hand watering is allowed any time.
That changes how we design. A yard where beds run on drip and only turf runs on spray legally gets more watering opportunity than a yard where everything is on spray. It also means your one automatic day has to count, which puts real pressure on coverage and head spacing.
Austin Water also runs programs most homeowners never use. If your household went over 20,000 gallons in a month, or over 15,000 gallons in two consecutive months, you may qualify for a free irrigation system check up by a licensed irrigator, requested within 60 days of that qualifying month. There is also an Irrigation Upgrade rebate of up to $1,000 and a WaterWise Landscape rebate of up to $3,000 for converting turf to native planting, both listed on Austin Water's rebates page. Confirm current terms before counting on any of it, since these programs change.
Is drip irrigation or a smart controller worth it here?
For planting beds, drip irrigation is the right answer here almost every time. It puts water at the root zone instead of into 100 degree air, and it gets that second watering day. The honest tradeoff is that drip has more small parts, emitters clog, and it hides its own failures because you cannot see it running from the kitchen window. It needs a filter, a pressure regulator, and someone looking at it a couple of times a year.
A weather based smart controller adjusts run times to local conditions and skips cycles after rain, which matters more on a one day per week schedule. But a smart controller on a badly designed system mostly automates the waste. Fix coverage and pressure first.
Does homeowners insurance cover sprinkler repairs?
Usually not for the system itself. Standard policies generally treat a worn out valve, a cracked line from soil movement, or a failed controller as maintenance, and maintenance is not a covered peril. Policies are more likely to respond to resulting damage, such as a mainline break that undermines a slab. Read your specific policy. We are landscapers, not adjusters.
